Freelancing Do's and Don'ts For 2018

Freelancing is a tough job and there are many people out there who are just after your money and also your time but there are also great people who want to help you earn money. You need to be careful about where you go, who you talk to you, and also who you share your personal information with. You also want to be careful for who you work for and what their motives are. For example, be sure you have everything written out in plain English somewhere easily available on the web if no contract is needed. Smaller freelance jobs have a less likely chance of being refused money for a number of reasons but the most important is that it is a little-to-no risk gig, bigger projects have a better chance of something happening with payment. Now, the freelancing world isn't as scary as I just made it sound, but it's just to get you thinking, to be careful and realize not everyone is on your side. With that said there are people who want to help you and there are websites that are legitimate businesses so just keep your eyes open, as well as your mind.

Do: Good work and be kind to all your customers. No one likes a winy contractor who asks for more money and complains about work load, or alternatively someone who makes up excuses. Do good work and do it in a timely manner.

Don't: Work for someone you don't trust. If something seems too good to be true, 9 times out of 10 it is. If someone is offering you amazing money for little to no work, be skeptic!

Do: Be happy to edit or fix whatever your customer wants. In the freelance world final product is subjective sometimes so if a customer wants a 10 minute fix don't be argumentative, because 10 minutes isn't worth losing large profits in the future. Not that a customer is just a profit margin but you need to keep your money making method in perspective.

Don't: Work for someone who has no credibility. For example, if you are on oDesk and you see that someone has no verified payment method and you see they haven't paid someone but are offering you a lot of money for work, be cautious, ask for money up front, around half depending on the project size, if they refuse, carry on and look elsewhere.

Do: Know how much you are worth.

Don't: Work for pennies, this is the Internet, not a sweatshop.

Ebay 2018 *DROPSHIPPING UPDATE*

Ebay is one of the best auction sites there is and if you have items lying around your home that you don't want anymore and think you can make a profit off of them then now is a better time than ever to get started on opening up and using an Ebay account. The great thing about Ebay nowadays is that it it not only an auction site but you can also set up buy-now options so you don't have to wait for the bidding war to stop or start you can just wait for someone to place an order. It is also one of the best sites to make money on the Internet and has been for a long time.

Where to find items to sell on Ebay:
  • Yard Sales: Yard sales are a fantastic place to find unique and worthy items to sell for a good profit on Ebay, and if you haggle you might be able to get something for a steal at a yard sale and sell it for a great profit.
  • Find Items You Already Own But Don't Want: Chances are you have many items around your house that you just don't want anymore, consider selling them because who knows, you might just make a good chunk of change instead of letting these items collect dust.
  • Buy In Bulk: Many people have made a good living off buying items in bulk and selling them for a profit on Ebay. This may not be a very simple method but if you can find a way to do it by possibly drop shipping, then you can make a good amount of money.
Drop Shipping

  • Drop Shipping is not as popular as some of the other methods out there but, drop Shipping can be a fantastic way to make money.
  • Drop Shipping, in its most simplest terms, is: moving (goods) from the manufacturer directly to the retailer without going through the usual distribution channels. What this means is that you can sell an item on eBay and you don't even really have it, but when the item is sold you buy it from another website for a cheaper price and ship it to the person that just bought it from you.
  • Deciding how you want to Drop Ship is really up to you. You can sell on eBay and source from Amazon. Or, you could source from eBay and sell on Amazon!
  • Essentially, you want to find a product for a cheap price and sell it for more money on another marketplace. When it is sold you buy it for the cheaper price from the other website and have it shipped to the person who bought it!
  • You also have to factor in eBay taxes and fees, so be sure to do the math if you decide to start drop shipping.
  • If this interests you, please read a more in-depth guide here.

These are just some ideas to get you started on your Ebay journey but there are many other methods you can use to find items that will be right for you to sell on Ebay. If you are considering selling anything on Ebay then why not create an account and start looking up what might sell!

oDesk 2018

ODesk is a pretty good website and there definitely is money to be made there, but there is so much competition and really, the only way to get started on oDesk is to fill out tons of job applications and hope someone will hire you. When I say competition, I mean competition, therere are so many people on that site offering the same service for less money. Most freelancers on oDesk are from non-English speaking countries yet take all the English jobs. Honestly, this is just my opinion, but oDesk doesn't seem worth my time, but hey, maybe it will be right for you. There isn't anything inherently wrong with oDesk, I just think that there are big flaws in the design and ethics of the website. Some word of advice, if you do decide to go and try freelancing at oDesk, be careful when choosing jobs that are only paid upon completion, because some people don't pay. You can alternatively work hourly and you will be guaranteed money for how many hours you work. That means no one can scam you! I don't like oDesk, personally, but maybe you will find more lucrative opportunities there, at least more than I did.
